A sly, bittersweet family dramedy about a broke university dropout who quits streaming videogames to become full-time carer to his cancer-stricken Amah—purely to snag the inheritance before his squabbling relatives do. What begins as a mercenary con slowly blossoms into an unexpectedly tender bond, as grandmother and grandson cook congee, trade secrets and rediscover the meaning of wealth that can’t be banked.
It’s always risky when a film about naked greed also begs you to bring tissues; you can’t help wondering if the sentiment will drown in cynicism. Will a plot driven by dollar signs misfire when it asks the audience to cry? In this case, emphatically no. Boonnitipat’s screenplay walks the tightrope with disarming grace, letting barbed humour clear space for heart-punch revelations without ever letting schmaltz win the day.
Shot in warm, handheld hues on bustling Bangkok streets and claustrophobic shophouse corridors, the debut director favours lived-in detail over melodramatic gloss. The film’s modest US$1 million budget belies its emotional wallop: social-media feeds overflowed with tear-stained selfies, propelling it to record-breaking box-office runs across Southeast Asia. Like its canny heroine, the movie knows exactly when to squeeze—and when to let go.
“Winning hearts across Asia… an irresistible tear-jerker that counts the true cost of family.” – Screen Daily
