A rags-to-riches jukebox biopic that shadows country-music icon Loretta Lynn from a one-room cabin in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, to standing ovations at the Grand Ole Opry. With Oscar-winning gusto, Sissy Spacek traces every hard-won mile of Lynn’s journey, backed by Tommy Lee Jones’s fiery turn as cheroot-chewing husband-manager “Doo” Lynn.

It’s always nerve-wracking when a single actor must both look and sound like the real deal; you can’t help wondering if the impersonation will ring true. Will Spacek’s vocals stand up beside Lynn’s own twang? Can a British director capture the rhythms of Appalachia without tipping into tourism? In this case, absolutely yes.

Working deep in the hollers, Michael Apted shot on location and had Spacek record each song live on set—no studio gloss, just raw timber and sawdust sweat. The hand-hewn authenticity extends to period jukes, rickety tour buses and stage lights so hot they seem to warp celluloid, grounding the film in a tactile sense of place.

More than a greatest-hits medley, The Coal Miner’s Daughter becomes a study of marriage, industry politics and the price of a voice that speaks for millions of working-class women. By the final fade-out, the melody of resilience lingers longer than any chart-topper.

A triumphant, toe-tapping saga—pure country gold.” – Chicago Sun-Times
